Hrubesch calls up Demirbay, Gnabry and WC winner Ginter

Germany U21s manager Horst Hrubesch has called up 25 players for the games against Italy on 27th March in Paderborn (20:00 CET) and England on 30th March in Middlesbrough (20:45 CET).

It’s a first call up to the squad for 1. FC Kaiserslautern’s Kerem Demirbay and Arsenal FC’s Serge Gnabry. “Kerem Demirbay has earned his place; we’ve been watching him for some time. I’m impressed by his footballing intelligence and his presence on the pitch”, said Hrubesch. “I wanted to bring Serge Gnabry in much earlier, but unfortunately he suffered a long term injury. We’ll have to see how far he has come since then.”

"Quality and international experience is impressive“

There are seven players in the Germany squad who have already gained some experience with the senior team, including World Champion Matthias Ginter from Borussia Dortmund.

“The quality and international experience that we have in our dressing room is impressive”, said Hrubesch. “With such a large squad I want to make sure everyone gets a chance to impose themselves and give us coaches the most difficult decision possible. The games against Italy and England are the last chances for me to try things out before the European Championships in the summer. It’s also a welcomed opportunity to hold talks with the players, outside of the games and training sessions”

The Euros will take place form 17th-30th June in the Czech Republic. The German U21s will play Serbia in their first game on 17th June (20:45 CET), Denmark in their second on 20th June (20:45 CET), before their final match on 23rd June against the hosts (20:45 CET). All three games will take place in the capital city, Prague.
