Hrgota rescues a point for Gladbach in Hamburg

Borussia Mönchengladbach’s run of failing to win after Europa League duty this season continues. Lucien Favre’s side could only record a 1-1 draw in their trip to Hamburg, although it took a very late equaliser. It’s a result that leaves Gladbach third in the Bundesliga table after matchday 22, while HSV sit in 14th.

The Foals’ rotation policy continued following their Europa League defeat on Thursday, with Germany striker Max Kruse back in the side. He missed a good opportunity to take the lead though, hitting the side netted after four minutes. Patrick Herrmann came closer less than 60 seconds later, with only the post denying him the opening goal. Hamburg then started to find their feet in the game and had half chances from Artjoms Rudnevs and Slobodan Rajkovic, but Yann Sommer remained without a serious test in the first half.

Stieber punishes Nordtveit’s mistake

Little changed after the break with Gladbach controlling the ball, but were at times pedestrian and erratic in possession. HSV looked the more likely to score but often panicked in the final third, up until the 73rd minute that is. A misplaced pass from Havard Nordtveit found its way to Zoltan Stieber up front and the Hungarian cut inside and clinically curled the ball into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.

That goal seemed to wake up Borussia, although they were almost caught on the counter twice in the closing stages - Rudnevs failed to add a cushion for the hosts, something they ultimately needed. In added time, a corner was swung in towards substitute Branimir Hrgota and he headed home to ensure a share of the spoils.
