Horn: "We want to win the Euros"

The 3-2 victory over Hoffenheim gave 1. FC Köln three more points in the quest for survival. Goalkeeper Timo Horn was in great form and after the game spoke to DFB.de about the fight against the drop, Jonas Hector and this summer’s U21 European Championship.

DFB.de: Timo Horn, three goals and three points against Hoffenheim – was that a big step towards survival?

Timo Horn: I think so. It was another incredible game. We could have doubled our lead in the first half to be honest. Hoffenheim had chances, which is unsurprising given their quality. It was tighter than it should have been really but we fought hard and in deserved to pick up the points in my opinion.

DFB.de: What are your thoughts on Jonas Hector’s goal?

Horn: Jonas has a lot of talent and he showed that yesterday. He got a bit lucky in terms of the deflection but the run was fantastic. He won the game for us.

DFB.de: Was it an important victory?

Horn: Paderborn won on Saturday so we had to take something from the game. The victory is hugely important. We had already showed that we could give Hoffenheim a good game and we did it again yesterday.

DFB.de: You’re now six points clear of the drop zone. How many points do you think you need to survive?

Horn: We can get closer to achieving our goals each week. We took a step in the right direction against Hoffenheim and would like to continue that. We’ve struggled to win successive games this season, which has meant consistency has been a struggle.

DFB.de: Let’s now talk about titles. The U21 European Championship takes place this summer. In a recent friendly you lost 3-2 to England, what did you think about the game?

Horn: It’s worth noting that England are an excellent side. They will be challenging for the title this summer. Games like that get decided by small measures. I think that we’ll have a good chance of lifting the title this summer as we’ll be able to put out our strongest side. We’ll be prepared for the tournament and hope to lift the title.

DFB.de: What are your personal expectations for the tournament?

Horn: I obviously want to play, so I’m doing all I can to make it a tough decision for Horst Hrubesch. There’s a lot of competition for the spot, so I will keep working hard and hope to impress him.
