Honorary membership for Beckenbauer

The DFB Congress has named Franz Beckenbauer as an honorary member of the German Football Association (DFB) for his services to football in Germany. Beckenbauer won the FIFA World Cup both as a player (in 1974) and as a coach (in 1990). As President of the Organising Committee for the 2006 FIFA World Cup, he played a decisive role in bringing the World Cup to Germany and making it a success.

"We have already made him an honorary captain for his great achievements on the pitch. By making him an honorary member, we want to acknowledge everything he has done for German football after his career as a player and coach. Our summer fairy-tale of 2006 would not have been possible without him. It is an honour to welcome Franz Beckenbauer as an honorary member", said DFB President Wolfgang Niersbach.

Horst R. Schmidt, Goetz Eilers and Walter Hützen were also named as DFB honorary members.

Horst R. Schmidt has been Treasurer of the DFB since 2007. From 1976 to 1992 he was a department head and director of the DFB, and was General Secretary from 1992 to 2007. Between 2001 and 2006, he was Executive Vice-President of the Organising Committee for the 2006 FIFA World Cup. Schmidt has previously been awarded the DFB's Silver and Gold Badges of Honour.

Since 2000, Goetz Eilers has been Presiding Judge of the DFB Federal Tribunal. From 1972 to 2006, he served as the DFB's legal counsel (General Counsel from 1989), and was also the Head of Human Resources there from 1992 to 2006. Eilers is also a recipient of the DFB's Silver and Gold Badges of Honour.

Niersbach: "Horst R. Schmidt and Goetz Eilers have been crucial in shaping the DFB over many years. Both of them are recognised for their expertise and dependability and have played a major part in ensuring that German football is now internationally renowned."

Walter Hützen was President of the Lower Rhine Football Association from 1989 to 2013, and was named Honorary President on 9 June 2013. At DFB level, he was an assessor for the DFB Federal Tribunal between 1982 and 1999, and has been a member of the Executive Committee since 1999. Niersbach said: "With this honorary membership, we can repay him just in part for all he has voluntarily given to football over the years."
