Holger Badstuber faces another lengthy spell on sidelines

Germany international Holger Badstuber from German record holders Bayern München faces another lengthy spell on the sidelines. The Champions League semi-finalists announced on Twitter on Thursday that the 26-year-old centre back has a thigh muscle tear in his left leg. He will travel to Vail in Colorado, USA to undergo an operation and will be out for three to four months.

Badstuber has said that he is very disappointed but “despite that I'm staying positive and will return fully fit. I know that FC Bayern will do everything they can in order for me to return as an important part of the side.”

“Holger won’t be discouraged by this new injury”

Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has expressed his condolences. “We feel so sorry for Holger,” said the Chairman. “He put in so much work to make his return and now this. But we’ve come to know and value Holger as a fighter. He’ll never allow himself to become discouraged even by this new injury. He knows how important he is to us. That will spur him on during the sports rehabilitation phase and help him recover fitness as quickly as possible," he added.

Holger Badstuber has a long history of injuries. He injured his cruciate ligament in December 2012 and then picked up a new tear during his recovery. Badstuber was out until August 2014 and then spent another spell on the sidelines between September 2014 and January 2015 after he ruptured a tendon, meaning he missed a total of almost 150 competitive games for Bayern. The defender made his comeback on the 25th March after almost two and a half years out in Germany’s 2-2 draw with Australia in Kaiserslautern. He also played the whole 90 minutes on Tuesday in Bayern’s 6-1 drubbing of FC Porto in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
