Hoffenheim end Bayern’s run

Record German champions Bayern München suffered their first league defeat since matchday 11 in their trip to third-placed TSG 1899 Hoffenheim on Tuesday night. The league leaders were beaten 1-0 in Sinsheim, earning Julian Nagelsmann’s side their first ever Bundesliga win over Bayern since entering the top flight around nine years ago.

Meanwhile, Borussia Dortmund set a new club record as they beat Hamburg 3-0. The league’s fourth-placed side are now unbeaten in 34 straight home games. HSV remain in 14th following the defeat. Elsewhere, 1. FC Köln came out on top in their six-pointer against fellow European hopefuls Frankfurt, moving up to fifth place. Eintracht are in seventh, which could still be enough for a Europa League qualifying spot come the end of the season.

Werder continued their remarkable turnaround, securing a 3-0 victory over Schalke 04. Bremen will continue to focus on avoiding relegation, although the three points take them up to eighth in the Bundesliga table and closer to Europe than the drop zone. The Green-Whites also leapfrogged Schalke, who are a point behind in tenth.

Ulreich can’t keep out Kramaric

Bayern made seven changes for their visit to Hoffenheim and were on the back foot in the early stages. It was during this period that TSG got their goal, with Croatian Andrej Kramaric firing past a somewhat culpable Sven Ulreich from the edge of the box. FCB had plenty of chances to level the scores, but either met their maker in Oliver Baumann or missed the target. The last side to beat Bayern were Dortmund in the first half of the season, with the score also 1-0.

BVB went ahead after just 13 minutes of their meeting with Hamburg on matchday 27 courtesy of a Gonzalo Castro free kick that caught Rene Adler flat-footed. However, the game remained wide open, mostly because Borussia failed to put away numerous chances. It took until the 81st minute before they could breathe more comfortably. Shinji Kagawa tapped in a second, before Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang grabbed his 25th goal of the campaign to wrap up the 3-0 win in added time.

Merkel watches Köln’s win over Frankfurt

The almost 44,000 spectators in Cologne included German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Tuesday evening, and she witnessed the visitors from Frankfurt enjoy the better of the game. However, it was the Billy Goats who went ahead shortly after the restart thanks to Serb Milos Jojic’s goal. The home side could also thank Timo Horn for helping them see out the win, as he made a string of fine saves.

Both Schalke and Bremen looked to push forward in the Weserstadion, but it was the hosts who went in front thanks to Theodor Gebre Selassie’s header on 24 minutes. S04 failed to capitalise on their chances to level the scores in the second half and were made to rue that, as a Max Kruse penalty and a goal from Germany U20 international Maximilian Eggestein made it six wins from seven for Werder.
