Höwedes: "Zidane was my role model"

No Alpe d‘Huez, no prologue, no individual time trial or green jersey. But yet, a Tour de France, or more accurately: Tour de Français. "La Mannschaft" are talking French aujourd'hui, kind of. Today, in the sixth leg: Benedikt Höwedes and his very special DFB.de vocabulary test.

RENDEZ-VOUS Which team would you most like to face at some point in the tournament?

France - the hosts. The atmosphere would be amazing for sure. It would be great to experience that.

DÉJÀ-VU Do you still remember your first trip to France?

We used to go on holiday to France quite frequently. We went to the Bretagne, but I can't remember where exactly. But I do remember that I always had a good time there. I associate a lot of positive memories with holidays in France.

RIEN NE VA PLUS What do you do in the last few minutes and seconds before a match?

I try to remain focused and go over the things I have to do during the 90 minutes in my head.

AU REVOIR How difficult is it for you to say goodbye to home before the tournament?

It's always difficult, since we are gone for quite a long time. Apart from your health, family is the most important thing we have.

OH, LÀ, LÀ Which EURO 2016 teams play particularly good football? Apart from Germany obviously…

Spain stands for that type of football, and so does France in my eyes.

CHAPEAU Which of your teammates have impressed you at the training camp in Ascona and here in Évian?

I've known most of them for quite some time now, so I know about their qualities. The only two players that I hadn't met yet were Joshua Kimmich and Julian Weigl. I think both are doing an extremely good job considering their age. They are very comfortable in possession and look brave on the pitch.

HOMMAGE Which French players have you always admired?

Zinedine Zidane. He was simply amazing. When I was still playmaker for my hometown club, Zizou was my clear role model. He was a true force.

FAUXPAS What's something embarrassing that's happened to you but not too embarrassing that you can't share?

I suffered very embarrassing pool defeats against the likes of Marc [ter Stegen] in a team battle. It was terrible. On the other hand it has to be said, that we actually won more times than they did.

CRÈME DE LA CRÈME Who do you consider favourites to win the European Championship? Apart from Germany obviously...

You can mention a few teams here, but Spain and France are my favourites.
