Höwedes out for up to twelve weeks

Injured World Cup winner Benedikt Höwedes will be out of action for a long time for his Bundesliga side Schalke 04, and will probably only be able to play again in the final stretch of the season. The club quoted sporting director Horst Heldt on Monday evening on Twitter: "After further tests, we're working on the basis that he'll be out for up to twelve weeks."

Defender Höwedes picked up a thigh injury whilst attempting a back-heel in a friendly against US side Fort Lauderdale Strikers. Schalke, who are currently sixth in the league, get their Bundesliga campaign back under way after the winter break at 17:30 CET on Sunday against Werder Bremen.
