History is on Germany's side

Germany have faced the “Three Lionesses” 20 times, winning 18, drawing two and never having lost to their English counterparts. Silvia Neid’s side go into the World Cup third place play-off with a good record, but there are no clear favourites going into the game.

England, who are currently ranked sixth in the world, had never reached this stage before – their previous best was the quarterfinals in 1995, 2007 and 2011 although they did win the Cyprus Cup this year. “We can give everyone a good game,” explained head coach Mark Sampson ahead of the tournament – his prediction has come true. They have already made history and will be hoping to come third in the World Cup, which also represent the best European finish at this year’s competition.

Sasic with a brace last time out

The teams met in the autumn in front of a packed Wembley in a game which saw the DFB Team run out 3-0 winners. Celia Sasic helped herself to a brace and Alex Scott put through her own net.

They also faced each other in the 2009 European Championship final (Helsinki). Germany won that encounter 6-2. Birgit Prinz and Inka Grings hit braces with the DFB Team’s other goals coming from Melanie Behringer and Kim Kulig. Karen Carney and Kelly Smith scored for England.

The first meeting of the sides game in August 1984 when two goals from now head coach Silvia Neid helped Germany to a 2-0 victory.

The meeting which has featured the most goals took place at Deepdale (Preston) in 1997. Germany ran out 6-4 winners on that occasion. Claudia Müller hit a hat-trick, Pia Wunderlich a brace and Kelly Ferr scored an own goal for Germany. Gillian Coultard (2), Hope Powell and Sue Smith netted for England.
