High stakes in 104th ‘Nordderby’

Bundesliga matchday 31 kicks off with a real cracker under the lights on Friday evening. The Werder Bremen fans will make the short journey across to Hamburg to watch the relegation-threatened Green Whites take on Hamburger SV in Germany's famous ‘Nordderby’. Such is the nature of the bottom of the Bundesliga table that a win would take Werder level on points with their opponents, and drag them into what is an ever-changing relegation battle. Worryingly for the hosts, Bruno Labbadia’s side have lost four of their last five matches and face a side bursting with confidence following a 3-2 win over Champions League hopefuls Wolfsburg last weekend. HSV will be hoping Pizarro’s curse continues - the Werder record goalscorer has scored in his last five but has never in his career scored in six consecutive matches.

Whatever the result, it promises to be an exciting match for the neutral. Werder have scored the second-highest number of goals in 2016 (after Bayern), but have not been able to keep a clean sheet in 33 Bundesliga outings. Hamburg, too, have been struggling and have lost their last two games in front of their home fans. With that said, a win tonight in the derby would be a real statement from the hosts, and with just three matchdays to go, only a brave punter would back them to be relegated. Kick-off: Friday, 20:30 CEST.
