High caliber guests at General Assembly

The VIP-list for the upcoming General Assembly – the 40th since reestablishment of the German football association DFB - could hardly be more impressive. German chancellor Dr. Angela Merkel, Interior Minister Dr. Thomas de Maizière, FIFA-President Joseph S. Blatter and UEFA’s General Secretary Gianni Infantino will all attend the two-day event in Essen, a major city in North Rhine-Westphalia.

DFB-President Dr. Theo Zwanziger said: “The high-caliber guest list is an indication that football’s relevance transcends the game itself. We are very happy to welcome each and every guest in Essen.”

The General Assembly, an event held regularly every three years, starts on Thursday at 4.30 P.M. with a two-hour ceremonial act, while the plenary session is scheduled for Friday. Decorations of the highly successful national teams – men, women and juniors – as well as tributes to several public figures of German football take place during the ceremony. Both national coaches travel to Essen: the men’s coach Joachim Löw and the women’s coach Silvia Neid. Adel Tawil, singer of the German pop duo “Ich + Ich”, performs Thursday evening.

260 delegates entitled to vote in Essen

Friday’s plenary session starts at 10.30 A.M.. The 260 delegates entitled to vote will have their hands full, as they have to decide upon the budget for the upcoming three years and a slate of propositions, including a realignment of league play. Votes on the DFB chairmanship and the executive board are part of the day’s agenda.

The regional associations as well as the Bundesliga support the re-election of reigning President Dr. Theo Zwanziger, who runs for a third term. Out of the chairmanship, only Vice-President Dr. Hans-Georg Moldenhauer will not run for another term, as he retires due to personal reasons following twenty years of service. Thüringen’s President Rainer Milkoreit has been nominated as his successor.
