Jupp Heynckes is once again the head coach of German champions Bayern Munich. The German record champions confirmed on Friday that the 72-year-old will take over until the end of the season after Carlo Ancelotti’s dismissal and will begin his job on Monday.
“We’re very grateful to Jupp for agreeing to become head coach. He’s the ideal coach for Bayern Munich right now,” said the club’s chief executive, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge. Sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic added: “Jupp Heynckes is a tactical genius and a first-class leader. We’re convinced that he’s the right man to bring the team back to winning ways and achieve our goals.”
Heynckes told kicker magazine that it’s not about a comeback: "It’s a goodwill gesture – I only did it because I have so much to thank Bayern Munich for. I have a good feeling about it and I’m ready to go.”
Hermann and Gerland become assistant coaches
Heynckes is re-establishing his tried and tested coaching staff upon his return. Peter Hermann, who has been released from Bundesliga 2 table toppers Fortuna Düsseldorf, will be one assistant. Likewise, Hermann Gerland will be released from his duties as head of Bayern Munich’s youth academy centre temporarily.
It is Heynckes’ fourth stint at Bayern. In his last stint at the club, he lead the record champions to the triple of the Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal and Champions League in 2013 and retired thereafter.
