Hertha climb upwards, Ingolstadt march on

Hertha BSC have taken another step towards their goal of securing Europa League football for next season. Berlin put on a solid display in their 2-0 triumph over a harmless FC Augsburg side, thanks to goals from John Brooks (12’) and Valentin Stocker (37’). The win puts them up to fifth place in the Bundesliga with 43 points.

FC Augsburg now find themselves in even more trouble, as they in the thick of the relegation battle. The club from Swabia have now gone six games without a win, and their points total of 29 means that they currently occupy the relegation-playoff spot.

Ingolstadt survive

FC Ingolstadt earned all three points in a hard-fought game against SV Darmstadt 98 which ended 3-2. They are now only one point away from safety, despite the fact that they were eight points away before the hectic fixtures over the past week.

It’s the third consecutive win for manager Maik Walpurgis, but it wasn’t easily earned, despite Pascal Groß’s opening goal for Ingolstadt after only 20 minutes. Darmstadt went into the break 2-1 up thanks to two goals from Mirko Vrancic, including one coming from the penalty spot, in the 33rd and 39th minutes of the match. Ingolstadt showed a lot of heart in fighting to keep their hopes of making it out of the relegation zone alive, through goals from Almog Cohen (68’) and Markus Suttner. The game was capped off with two red cards, one for either side, awarded to Romain Bregerie and Colak with three minutes of regulation time to play. It was a historical moment as the win marked the first time that FC Ingolstadt have managed to string together three wins in a row in their two campaigns in the top flight of German football.

Darmstadt have not picked up a single point in any of their 14 away games this season, and are almost certainly going to be relegated, given the fact that they trail the relegation-playoff spot by 14 points.
