Hertha BSC sack manager Jos Luhukay

Hertha BSC have responded to their slide down the Bundesliga table and announced on Thursday morning the sacking of Jos Luhukay with immediate effect. The team from Berlin had suffered three consecutive defeats and, following the 1-0 home defeat to Bayer Leverkusen, find themselves in 17th place.

Former player and record appearance holder Pal Dardai (38) and former assistant manager Rainer Widmayer (47) have been place in interim charge and will prepare the team for the match against 1. FSV Mainz 05 on Saturday (15:30 CET).

Luhukay’s assistants depart too

In an initial statement, Hertha thanked Luhukay for his successful contribution over the past few years. “Following an extensive analysis of the current situation, the club has decided to also part company with assistants Markus Gellhaus and Rob Reekers,” it added.

51-year-old Luhukay became manager in the 2012/13 season. During his first year, he guided his team to promotion to the Bundesliga and the year after they finished in 11th. Hertha wanted to establish themselves in the Bundesliga this season, but now fear relegation for the third time since 2010.
