Hendrich and Peter in Algarve Cup squad for Germany’s women

Babett Peter and Kathrin Hendrich have been named in Germany national coach Silvia Neid’s 23-woman squad for the upcoming Algarve Cup, to be held in Portugal between 5 and 12 March.

The call-up marks Peter’s return to the national side after eight months on the sidelines caused by a stress fracture in her left foot. Speaking about the defender’s return, Neid said: "We’re extremely glad that Babett is back on the right track after such a long injury layoff. We want to help her get back to her best as soon as possible."

Meanwhile, Kathrin Hendrich has received her first call-up to the women’s squad. The 21-year-old Bayer 04 Leverkusen defensive midfielder was part of the U-20 squad that finished as World Cup runners-up in summer 2012. "At the U-20 Women’s World Cup, she showed that she is an important player," said Neid, "and it’s now time for her to take the next step in her international career."

Neid: "Important to see how we measure up at the highest level"

At this year’s Algarve Cup, Germany’s women will play Iceland on 5 March, China on 7 March and their EURO 2013 final opponents Norway on 10 March, with classification matches due to take place on 12 March.

"The Algarve Cup offers us the ideal opportunity to work intensively with our players over a relatively long period," said the national team coach. "It’s also important to see how we measure up at the highest level so that we can continue to develop as a team. As in previous years, we want to use this opportunity to try some things out."
