Hecking: "It's kind of crazy"

Wolfsburg’s manager was the penultimate person onto the podium where the winners received their medals and the trophy. He hopped up onto the stage and stretched his arms out with his thumbs up. He was one happy man. Dieter Hecking turns 51 in September and finally won his first big title late Saturday evening. A 3-1 victory over Borussia Dortmund in the 72nd DFB Cup Final secured VfL Wolfsburg a deserved first DFB Cup triumph and their second title since being crowned Bundesliga Champions in 2009.

Hecking, who had a "2015 Cup Winners" shirt and a cap with ‘King’ written across the front, spoke about the outstanding performance by the entire team at the press conference. In addition, he commented on how everything felt "kind of crazy" and that he was unbelievably proud of the side. VfL sporting director Klaus Allofs was full of praise, remarking that "it’s down to the work of Dieter Hecking."

Relegation battle, Europa League, Bundesliga runners-up - and DFB Cup winners

Hecking moved to Wolfsburg two and a half years ago and took over a club sitting in 15th position. "Klaus Allofs outlined Wolfburg’s sporting perspective and was very convincing," remarked Hecking. The club was caught up in a relegation battle when he first took charge but is now in the midst of creating a beautiful and promising future.

After securing their top-flight status, they reached the Europa League the following year. Everything happened very quickly. The Wolves finished runners-up in the Bundesliga just two weeks ago and now there’s going to be a new name engraved on the DFB Cup after they triumphed in the final.

For once the centre of attention

Hecking recently commented to FAZ that he doesn’t need all the glamour and attention associated with football. His task is simply to turn VfL Wolfsburg into one of the top teams. This means hard work and not resting on your laurels. The club’s ambitions are something new to him after having different aims back at Verl, Lübeck, Aachen, Hannover and Nürnberg.

There are equally all the expectations to manage, including his own. "When I’m in Berlin, I want to win," said Hecking the day before the final. "I trust that my side will give it their all once again against Dortmund," he cotinued. It must be a good feeling for a trainer when he knows that he can completely count on his players.

His journey with VfL continues but nobody can be certain where it will lead. One thing’s for sure though and that’s the fact that Dieter Hecking has created a VfL Wolfburg side which could be crowned Bundesliga Champions once again.
