Hartel scores three as under-21s thrash Azerbaijan

Germany under-21s got back on track in their bid to reach the 2019 European Championships by thrashing Azerbaijan 7-0 in their fourth group game.

After losing 3-1 to Norway last time out, Stefan Kuntz’s side bounced back perfectly in Baku, to jump back to second place in Group five, just one point behind Ireland.

Three goals from Marcel Hartel, who opened the scoring after just two minutes, were added to by Nadiem Amiri and Aaron Seydel before half-time.

Hartel got his second straight after the break and completed his hat trick before the hour mark. The scoring didn’t stop then either, as Lukas Klostermann and Levin Öztunali added further gloss to an already impressive scoreline for Kuntz’s side.

The game could have panned out so differently had Budag Nasirov made the most of a mix-up between captain Thilo Kehrer and Alex Nübel, but the home striker fired over and from then on the European Champions never looked back.
