Hansen brace fires Wolfsburg into last 16

Defending champions VfL Wolfsburg have overcome their first hurdle in this year’s Champions League, securing a place in the last 16 of the competition. The German Champions claimed a 2-1 win against Norwegian Champions Stabaek FK in the second leg, following on from their 1-0 win in Norway. The Bundesliga table-toppers’ last-16 opponents will be SV Neulengbach from Austria, who overcame Hungarian side MTK Hungaria in the last 32 (4-3 on aggregate).

Of all people, it was Norwegian Caroline Hansen, a summer signing from Stabaek, who scored the two goals that ensured progression for Wolfsburg, who are targeting a third straight Champions League title and have never lost a European game (W18, D2).

Tensions rose after a surprise equaliser by former VfL player Melissa Wiik in the 56th minute. Chance after chance went begging for the hosts in their search for the lead, with Alexandra Popp also heading against the post. 19-year-old Hansen finally grabbed the decisive goal with a long-range strike six minutes from time. The opening goal was brilliantly assisted by Martina Müller.
