Hannover win as Zieler sets record

The Sunday evening fixture saw Hamburger SV’s recent run of good form come to an end in front of their own supporters. Bruno Labbadia’s men lost 2-1 at home to Hannover 96 and consequently missed out on the chance to jump into the Europa League spots.

Michael Gregoritsch put HSV in front after just six minutes but second half goals from Hiroshi Kiyotake (59’) and Salif Sane (67’) turned the game around. The result means that Michael Frontzeck’s side have moved out of the relegation zone.

Hamburg are making their best start to a season for five years and they started well in front of 54,607 supporters. They created a number of early chances but failed to convert the majority of them, with Hannover struggling at the back and looking devoid of ideas. The hosts went in front after six minutes when Sven Schipplock fed Nicolai Müller. His cross was tapped home by Gregoritsch.

It was one way traffic for the majority of the first half with Dennis Diekmeier, Marcelo Díaz and Müller all missing presentable opportunities before the half time whistle blew.

Hannover score from nothing

Schipplock missed a great chance to put his side 2-0 up after 58 minutes but his effort lacked conviction and he was left to rue that missed chance as Hannover equalised against the run of play soon after. Emir Spahic unnecessarily brought down Uffe Bech in the box and Kiyotake coolly slotted home. The event shocked HSV and they found themselves 2-1 down moments later when Sane powerfully headed from Kiyotake’s cross 11 yards. The Japan international has now been directly involved in each of Hannover’s last seven league goals.

The Lower Saxony side’s triumph also saw Ron-Robert Zieler write history. The Germany international has now completed 153 consecutive Bundesliga games. Ahead of today’s match the record was held by former Hannover defender Jupp Hellingrath. Zieler has played every Hannover league game since the 4-1 defeat in Dortmund in April 2011.
