Hannover held to 1-1 draw by Hertha

Matchday 28 in the Bundesliga opened with a 1-1 draw between Hannover 96 and Hertha BSC on Friday night. Christian Schulz gave the home side hope of claiming all three points with his goal 15 minutes from time, but Valentin Stocker’s brilliant volley in the 83rd minute ensured a share of their spoils. It’s a result that favours the visitors from Berlin, who maintain their four-point gap over Hannover. The Lower Saxony club move up into 14th for now, but still remain without a win in twelve games and are only four points clear of the relegation play-off spot.

Hannover started on the front foot in the HDI Arena with some loud home fans cheering them on, but the first goal almost went the way of Berlin inside 15 minutes. Germany keeper Ron-Robert Zieler could only parry Sebastian Langkamp’s point-blank header to John Anthony Brooks, who duly slotted home. However, the flag had already been raised for offside against Langkamp from the free kick. Salif Sané also had a chance following a free kick at the other end, but his weak header was comfortably kept out by Thomas Kraft after 32 minutes.

Tayfun Korkut’s side were tasked with taking the initiative as they looked to end an eleven-match winless run and could have taken the lead when Jimmy Briand met Hiroki Sakai’s cross in the box. The Frenchman fluffed his lines though and fired well over the crossbar, meaning the scores were level at the break.

Two late goals

The second 45 began with a fantastic chance for the home side to take the lead, but a daisy cutter from Lars Stindl, who has agreed to join Borussia Mönchengladbach at the end of the season, bounced back off the upright. It wasn’t the signal for a half full of chances as we had to wait until the 75th minute before the next serious goalscoring opportunity came along and it also provided the opener. Sané’s header from a corner was only parried by Kraft, allowing Christian Schulz to squirm the ball over the line from close range.

It took just eight minutes for Hertha to muster a response though. A free kick fell kindly to Valentin Stocker just outside the box, but there was nothing lucky about his finish – a sweet, acrobatic volley into the bottom corner of Zieler’s goal.
