Hamburg recommended as candidate city for 2024 Olympics

If Hamburg brings the Olympics back to Germany in 2024, it will be 52 years since the games were last held on German soil in Munich in 1972. The president of the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) announced the decision on Monday evening in Frankfurt. It means that Berlin miss out on the bidding process.

"It was a close decision," said DOSB president Alfons Hörmann. "Hamburg gained 18 votes to Berlin's 11 with four voters voting for both cities. The city has presented a fascinating and compact Olympic concept and fits with the IOC’s Agenda 2020 reform process."

DOSB’s general assembly must approve decision

Hamburg’s candidacy must still be rubber-stamped by the DOSB’s general assembly in a meeting this Saturday. It’s almost certain that the recommendation will be approved, signalling the start of a long and hard-fought campaign.

Hamburg must also win a referendum, where polls show that a majority of residents approve of a bid for the 2024 or possibly the 2028 Summer Olympics. Serious consideration must be given to the cost of staging the 16 day event; Hamburg would need to undertake some major construction projects.
