Hamburg and Köln with good reasons to be confident

Hamburger SV versus 1. FC Köln: a classic DFB Cup encounter between two of the competition’s most successful sides takes place on Tuesday evening (18:30 CET). HSV have won the cup on three occasions, once more than their opponents from Cologne. But you have to scroll far down the list of previous winners before you find either of the two, with Hamburg last lifting the trophy in 1987 (3-1 win against Stuttgarter Kickers) and Köln back in 1991 (4-3 on penalties against Werder Bremen).

But both teams go into tonight’s game – one of just two round of 16 clashes between Bundesliga clubs – with confidence. “We’re determined to reach the quarterfinals,” said HSV head coach Markus Gisdol, who has instilled a siege mentality at home since arriving, something that has long been missing. The relegation strugglers have won their last three matches at the Volksparkstadion. "Im obviously very happy that we are playing at home. I’m expecting a very special atmosphere," said Gisdol, who senses "a great opportunity."

Köln bring 4,800 jubilant fans

Köln travel to Hamburg with 4,800 jubilant fans behind them. "It’s really amazing how actively these fans follow us," the club president Werner Spinner told Express. "But this is definitely a result of the great developments that the team has made under this coaching team, as well as the whole club." Köln currently have 32 points to their name in the league, their best tally after 19 matchdays since the 1989/1990 season, when they last finished second in the league.

The catalyst of their successful season has undoubtedly been Anthony Modeste. His 15 league goals account for half of Köln’s goals this season and HSV are one of his favourite opponents. The Frenchman has netted seven goals in his last five appearances, including a hat-trick in the 3-0 win earlier this season.

Sixth DFB Cup meeting

The last of the five meetings between these two sides in the cup saw Hamburg emerge victorious. The northern club edged passed tonight’s opponents 2-1 in the 2013/14 round of 16 tie, thanks to a late winner from Ivo Ilicevic. It was one of two wins for Hamburg, while Köln have progressed to the next round on three occasions.
