HSV and Darmstadt secure unexpected wins

Hamburger SV ended newly promoted RB Leipzig’s unbeaten run at home on matchday 20, as they secured a rather surprising 3-0 victory to move out of the relegation zone. Borussia Dortmund also suffered a set-back in the title race, losing 2-1 against bottom-side SV Darmstadt 98. Eintracht Frankfurt, another team from the upper regions of the standings, lost 3-0 at Bayer 04 Leverkusen. Table-toppers FC Bayern were able to take advantage of these results, earning late 2-0 victory at FC Ingolstadt. Borussia Mönchengladbach meanwhile continue to climb the standings after a 1-0 win at Werder Bremen.

HSV started the game in Leipzig with plenty of confidence held a two-goal lead midway through the first half, courtesy of two set-pieces. First, Kyriakos Papadopoulos nodded home the opener and six minutes later Walace followed suit to give the visitors a 2-0 lead after 24 minutes. In the closing stages of the game Aaron Hunt added a third goal, giving Hamburg their second win in a row. For Leipzig this was the first home defeat in eleven games and they now sit seven points adrift from table-toppers FC Bayern.

Colak goal gives Lilly’s edge over BVB

Dortmund had a scrappy start in Darmstadt and conceded the opener through Terrance Boyd after 21 minutes. The visitors began to invest more and managed to level the score before half-time with Raphael Guerreiro finding the target. But a second-half goal from Antonio-Mriko Colak saw the underdogs retake the lead and afterwards fend off Dortmund’s charge for a second equaliser.

Eintract Frankfurt are still in third place despite losing 3-0 in Leverkusen. Chicharito fired the hosts in front with an artistic strike and added a second goal to his tally after the break. Germany international Kevin Volland provided Leverkusen’s third goal after 78 minutes.

Last-minute victory for Bayern

FC Bayern München have extended their lead at the top of the standings thanks to a late 2-0 victory in Ingolstadt. Arturo Vidal broke the deadlock after 90 minutes and Arjen Robben added a quick second goal to give the record champions the win.

Thorgan Hazard finished off a well-executed counter attack for Gladbach in Bremen to take the lead after 12 minutes. Werder were unable to stage a comeback and now find themselves with ever growing relegation worries, having dropped back into 16th place. Gladbach on the other hand are back in the top half of the standings following their third consecutive victory.
