Haching's match winner Einsiedler: "Lions over Bayern"

Three Bundesliga clubs were eliminated in the first round of the 2015/16 DFB Cup at the weekend, including promoted FC Ingolstadt after their 2-1 loss in the derby to SpVgg Unterhaching. The decisive man for the team from the Regionalliga Bayern was double goalscorer Markus Einsiedler. In an interview with DFB.de, the 26-year-old speaks about the biggest day of his career. He also reveals why he often looked at the clock after the 47th minute and why he’d prefer 1860 München over Bayern in the second round of the DFB Cup.

DFB.de: Mr Einsiedler, is this the biggest day of your career so far?

Markus Einsiedler: Of course, it’s simply unbelievable. We are semi-pros at best and we have just knocked a Bundesliga side out of the DFB Cup. That is huge for the team, the coach and everyone here.

DFB.de: What was going on in the changing room afterwards?

Einsiedler: The mood was amazing. The club has had a bit of a ride in recent years. Firstly being relegated from the 2. Bundesliga, then from the third division. It was important for everyone that we could write positive headlines again. Everyone realizes that it can bring breathe new life into things.

DFB.de: One week ago you drew 2-2 against Ingolstadt’s second team in the Regionalliga Bayern. And then you followed that with this coup against the first team. How can you explain that?

Einsiedler: You can’t explain some things. We are the big name in the Regionalliga and everyone tries twice as hard to beat us. In the DFB Cup things are completely the other way round. We had nothing to lose and gave everything we could. We rewarded ourselves for a great performance.

DFB.de: What was going through your head after your second goal?

Einsiedler: I was then sure that we could cause the upset. But that was in the 47th minute so there was still a long time to play. I was looking at the clock quite often. In the end we didn’t allow them many chances, but we already knew that Ingolstadt are always dangerous at set pieces. When they got one goal back it became entertaining again, but we withstood the pressure.

DFB.de: What does this success mean for you personally?

Einsiedler: Of course it makes me proud that I was able to make the difference with my goals. Strikers have to score goals, that’s why they’re there. I haven’t been in good form for the past few weeks – I only started to feel better again in the last few days. The manager has shown his trust in me and I’m happy that I could repay him.

DFB.de: And for the team?

Einsiedler: We don’t need to speak about promotion now – even if many expect that from the club because of its history. Euphoria is nice, but we shouldn’t get complacent. The present says something different: I am the oldest player in the squad at the age of 26. The average age of our squad is 22 – that is the reality. In the long term it is the right way for the club. We have to consolidate, establish ourselves in the Regionalliga and develop talent. Only after that can we talk about promotion. It is also no secret that Unterhaching’s financial situation is a lot worse off when compared to FC Bayern and 1860 München. For this reason, progression was very important because it brings in more money.

DFB.de: Who would you like to draw in the second round?

Einsiedler: 1860 München would be a dream. A local derby, a sold-out stadium and again a chance of progressing. Of course some want FC Bayern – but that would definitely be the end of the road for us in the DFB Cup. So I’d prefer 1860 München. But whatever comes for us, every further step in the DFB Cup is a great thing and a huge experience for us, and one that we will savour. I’m already looking forward to it.
