Gündogan scores to cap off a dream Premier League debut

All the Germany internationals, Mesut Ozil, Shkodran Mustafi (both Arsenal), Ilkay Gundogan and Leroy Sané (both Manchester City) celebrated comfortable victories on matchday five of the Premier League. Manchester City cantered to a 4-0 win over Bournmouth, keeping them top of the table with 15 points from their opening five games. Arsenal were also comfortable winners as they recorded a 4-1 away win at Hull City to place themselves second with ten points.

Gündogan started next to Fernandinho in midfield on his Premier League debut and capped his performance with his first goal in the league, as he slotted home following good work from Kevin de Bruyne. The Citizen’s head coach Pep Guardiola subbed the Germany international off in the 72nd minute, with Leroy Sané coming on in his place for his second Premier League appearance.

De Bruyne put City ahead in the 15th minute before Kelechi Iheanacho, Rahim Sterling and Gündogan struck. It wasn’t a totally positive day for Sané and Co. though as Nolito was sent off four minutes from time.

Özil und Mustafi on the right track

Ozil and Mustafi were in the starting XI for Arsenal and bot hof them showed themselves to be in good form. Alexis Sanchez put the Gunners ahead in the 17th minute before Hull midfielder Jake Livermore saw red for a handball in the box shortly before half time. The resulting penalty from Sanchez was stopped by Tigers’ goalkeeper Eldin Jakupovic.

Arsenal took control with the extra man after half-time, with Theo Wallcott doubling his team’s lead after good work from Alex Iwobi. Hull grabbed one back through a Robert Snodgrass penalty but it was only to be a consolation as Sanchez and Xhaka both fired home late to put the finishing touches to a comprehensive victory.

Ter Stegen shines in Barcelona's clear victory

Spanish champions FC Barcelona are back on track in La Liga, thanks to their attacking superstars. One week after their 2-1 home defeat to newly promoted side Deportivo Alavés, the Catalan side eased past newly promoted CD Leganés with a 5-1 win.

The attacking trio of Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez stood out from the off, as did Germany international Marc-André ter Stegen who was given a chance to showcase his skills. His team are now level on points with table toppers Real Madrid, who will face Espanyol on Sunday.

Messi, Suarez and Neymar scored a goal each in the first half, while ter Stegen denied Darwin Machis with a top-drawer save after 34 minutes. Messi added another goal after the break from the penalty spot and midfielder Rafinha, brother of FC Bayern's Thiago, made it 5-0 with a well-hit effort before Gabriel secured a consolation goal from a direct free kick.
