Gündogan out with knee ligament damage

Bad news for Ilkay Gündogan: The Germany international ruptured his cruciate ligament in his right knee whilst playing for Manchester City against Watford on Wednesday evening. This was revealed on Friday after further scans had been completed on his injury.

The news came as a shock to Germany head coach Joachim Löw. “It’s a tough pill to swallow for Ilkay. He’s been playing so well recently and now he’s going to be out for a long time. It’s difficult to comfort a player in that kind of situation, it’s really disappointing news. Ilkay has proven before that he can come back from injury. I’m convinced that he will come back even stronger. Everyone at the national team wishes him a speedy recovery. Ilkay knows that we are all here for him and he can rely on us for support.”

Guardiola: “It’s disappointing news”

It’s a setback for the midfielder’s career. The 26-year old was already forced to miss the European Championships in France this summer after dislocating his knee. He also couldn’t play at the World Cup in 2014 because of a back injury.

“It’s a very difficult and disappointing situation for him,” said Manchester City head coach Pep Guardiola. “We’re really going to miss him. He’s been very unlucky.” Gündogan moved to Manchester City this summer from Borussia Dortmund. Gündogan was having a very good season at the club, having already scored five and providing two assists.” created by mmc/ej
