Ilkay Gundogan and Leroy Sané have won the English Premier League for the first time as Manchester City were crowned champions without even kicking a ball on Sunday afternoon.
Manchester United’s 1-0 loss at home to West Brom means Citys current points total of 87 cannot be surpassed with five games to go, with their cross-city rivals now on 71. The title is City’s fifth in their history.
It is the second trophy of the season for Gündogan and Sané, who won the League Cup with City in February. Pep Guardiola’s team had done all they could to win the title this weekend, by beating Tottenham 3-1, in which Gündogan scored the second goal from the penalty spot.
The 27-year-old moved to Manchester from Borussia Dortmund in 2016, while Sané made the switch from Schalke in the same season.
City have previously won England’s top division in 1937, 1968, 2012 and 2014. The crown is Guardiola’s seventh in three countries having won La Liag with Barcelona in 2009, 2010 and 2011, before claiming all three Bundesliga season’s he coached in with FC Bayern in 2014, 2015 and 2016.
