Group D: Croatia beat Spain to top group - Turkey finish third

Holders Spain missed out on claiming top spot in Group D at EURO 2016. They were beaten 2-1 by a strong Croatian side, who qualified for the knockout stages as group winners.

Álvaro Morata (7‘) opened the scoring for Spain, before Nikola Kalinic (45‘) equalised. Sergio Ramos missed a penalty (72‘). Former Wolfsburg player Ivan Perisic netted in the 87th minute to shock the Spaniards. Spain now face Italy in the round of 16 on Monday (18:00 CEST) in Saint-Denis in a repeat of the 2012 European Championship final. Croatia will face one of the teams that finished third on Saturday (21:00 CEST) in Lens.

Yilmaz and Tufan give Turkey hope

Meanwhile, Turkey’s result meant that they came third in the group. Manager Fatih Terim’s side beat Czech Republic 2-0 in Lens in their last game and therefore finished with three points to their name, one point more than the Czechs. Due to the results in Group D, Northern Ireland have qualified for the round of 16 despite a 1-0 defeat to World Champions Germany.

Burak Yilmaz (10‘) and Ozan Tufan (65‘) scored the goals for Turkey. Czech Republic were eliminated without securing a single victory.
