Grindel voted into UEFA Executive Committee and FIFA Council

The president of the German Football Association (DFB), Reinhard Grindel, has been voted into the UEFA Executive Committee at the 41st Ordinary Congress in Helsinki with a large majority. 44 of the 55 national associations voted for Grindel. The delegates also voted the DFB President to be the European representative on the FIFA council, the most elite committee in world football.

Grindel had applied as one of eleven candidates for the eight vacant places on UEFA’s executive committee. Grindel will serve four years in his new role at UEFA. He will serve two years on the Fifa council, seeing out the remaining two years that his predecessor, Wolfgang Niersbach, was due to serve but is unable to due to being suspended by FIFA for controversy surrounding events leading up to the 2006 World Cup.

Grindel: "Represent the interests of professional and amateur football"

Reinhard Grindel said, "It’s important that German football has a voice in world football again and has the chance to influence future decisions. I see my main task as ensuring the interests of professional and amateur football are equally represented and to ensure the adherence to Good Governance and Compliance. Concrete measures such as a shorter time in office and a stronger approach to match fixing and doping were decided upon in Helsinki and these are important aspects for the integrity of our sport.”

DFL President Dr. Reinhard Rauball said, "Many congratulations to Reinhard Grindel! The DFL welcomes the decision to introduce the DFB President to the UEFA Executive Committee and the FIFA Council. It’s a correct and important decision that the biggest football association in the world can contribute to these committees. Obviously, UEFA and FIFA are also looking to win back the trust of various football associations and their representatives over the next few years. The DFL believes that the consideration of the joint interests of the various leagues and clubs around the world is of great importance and forms the basis for the future of professional football."

DFB Vice-president Dr. Rainer Koch said, "I’m pleased with the clear result of this vote for Reinhard Grindel, which is also proof of the international recognition which he has received for his work up to now. It’s not only important for the whole German Football Association with a view to EURO 2024 to have a representative on an international committee, but, as DFB President, Reinhard Grindel represents a link between grassroots and the top and he will continue to bring these closer together when working on the UEFA Executive Committee."

The FIFA Council will come together in Bahrain on 11th May 2017 at the Ordinary FIFA Congress.
