Grindel puts forward Germany EURO 2024 application

The president of the German Football Association, Reinhard Grindel, formally confirmed Germany’s interest in hosting the 2024 European Championships. UEFA General Secretary Theodore Theodoridis heard Germany’s application at the UEFA headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland on Wednesday (01/03). The German Football Association Committee decided in their meeting on 20th January 2017 to apply to host the tournament in 2024.

Reinhard Grindel said: "It was important to me that I personally presented our application to UEFA. We’re aware that hosting such a big event brings challenges. However, we’re confident in saying that, with our vast experience, our current stadium infrastructure and the basic conditions in Germany, we can put on an economic, first-class tournament. In addition, the basic liberal and civil rights are in place in this country to ensure that players, fans and members of the press will be safe and protected during the tournament. We will now formulate a professional application in co-operation with the cities and stadia which will be ready for formal submission by April 2018.”

UEFA General Secretary Theodoridis was presented with a 40-side document along with the declaration of interest and a short presentation of the 17 potential host cities. The city of Dresden was 18th on the list, but is one of ten potential places that the German Football Association has pulled from the application because such stadia cannot offer at least 30,000 seats for spectators.

UEFA to announce short-list on 10th March

On 10th March, the applicants to host EURO 2024 will find out if they have got past the first stage. After preparing the application requirements for UEFA on 17th March, the German Football Association will present the requirements to the stadia on 11th April this year. The interested stadia have until 12th June 2017 to submit their formal application to the German Football Association, should they wish to be a host stadium at EURO 2024.

On 15th September 2017, the German Football Association Committee will decide which ten stadia have been chosen to present to UEFA as the ten potential host stadia for the tournament. Interested national associations have until 27th April 2018 to submit all of the relevant documents to UEFA and a decision will be made on which nation will host EURO 2024 in September 2018.
