Goretzka scores in Schalke's 2-0 win over Hertha

FC Schalke moved into the top half of mid table after beating Hertha Berlin 2-0 on Matchday 20 of the Bundesliga. Hertha missed the chance to move up to third after goals from Guido Burgstaller and German International Leon Goretzka in each half were enough to give the side from Gelsenkirchen all three points.

On a new playing surface at the Veltins Arena, the home side looked to move the ball around quickly. It was Hertha however who had the first chance of the game, but Salomon Kalou could not hit the target. Schalke’s engine room Goretzka then crashed an effort against the woodwork from distance before the midfielder tested Rune Jarstein again after a through ball from Daniel Caligiuri.

Burgstaller sets Schalke on their way

Schalke got stronger as the game went on, and they started to find the gaps in the Berlin defence. Caligiuri’s strong run moments later set up Burgstaller, but the Austrian could only fire wide of the far post. He made amends soon after, rifling home after a chipped through ball from Nabil Bentaleb to give Schalke a deserved lead.

Pal Dardai looked to strengthen going forward after the break by bringing on Vladimir Darida, but Schalke continued to have the upper hand and it was Goretzka who doubled the lead with a super finish from 20 yards following a strong run. Veded Ibisevic, who was quiet for long parts of the game, missed a good chance to half the deficit with twenty minutes to go, firing straight at Schalke keeper Fährmann and Peter Pekarik also failed to make it a tense finish by shooting just wide with fifteen minutes to go.
