Goretzka on target in Schalke victory

Germany international Leon Goretzka was on target during FC Schalke’s 4-1 victory over VfL Wolfsburg on Bundesliga matchday 28. Borussia Mönchengladbach secured a 3-2 Rhein-derby victory at 1. FC Köln. Hamburg SV earned 2-1 home-victory over TSG 1899 Hoffenheim. RB Leipzig struck late to bag three points with a 1-0 win over Bayer 04 Leverkusen, while SC Freiburg celebrated a 1-0 victory over FSV Mainz 05.

Guido Burgstaller gave Schalke an early lead six minutes into the game, with Goretzka adding a second goal for the Royal Blues after 23 minutes. Daniel Caligiuri all but settled the tie with his goal against his former club shortly after the break. Burgstaller’s second goal of the match after 77 minutes gave the hosts a 4-0 lead, with Mario Gomez finding a consolation goal from the penalty spot just two minutes later.

Gladbach win the Rhein-derby

In their 86th league encounter, Gladbach got off to a better start in Cologne with Jannik Vestergaard scoring the opener 13 minutes into the game. The hosts were quick to show a reaction and levelled five minutes later as Anthony Modeste assisted Christian Clemens equaliser. The Foals were back in the lead ten minutes after the restart, as Ibrahima Traoré found the target. Again, Köln only required a few minutes to find a response, with Modeste scoring the equaliser himself this time around. Lars Stindl fired Gladbach into the lead again after 80 minutes and this time Köln managed no reply.

Second in the standings RB Leipzig looked set for their first goalless draw in their Bundesliga history, but a late goal from Yussuf Poulsen allowed the hosts to snatch a victory against Bayer 04 Leverkusen. Leipzig’s Willi Orban had been sent off following a second bookable offense in the later stages of the game.

HSV continues winning run at home

Hamburg took control of the game with Hoffenheim from the start and held a lead after 25 minutes, when a free-kick from Aaron Hunt found the target. The visitors, having beating table toppers FC Bayern during the week, were quickly level again after Andrej Kramaric scored from the spot. Midway through the second half, Hunt secured HSV’s fourth consecutive home victory with his second goal of the match.

Mainz on the other hand, have now suffered five straight defeats and relegation worries are growing stronger. Substitute Nils Petersen scored just one minute after being brought on midway through the second half to claim a 1-0 win and see Freiburg occupy a Europa League spot until at least Sunday.
