Go‎retzka helps Schalke past Gladbach, Rüdiger’s Roma out

A goal from Die Mannschaft’s Leon Goretzka helped FC Schalke 04 see off Borussia Mönchengladbach in the all-German UEFA Europa League last-16 tie on Thursday night. The game finished 2-2 at Borussia-Park on the night, with the 3-3 aggregate score seeing the Royal Blues into the quarter-finals on away goals.

Gladbach almost had one foot in the last eight when Andreas Christensen’s opener and a rocket from Germany U21 international Mahmoud Dahoud had them 2-0 up at the break. However, Markus Weinzierl’s Schalke fought back in the second half, with Goretzka cancelling out the Foals’ away goal from the first leg after 54 minutes, before Nabil Bentaleb’s decisive penalty ensured that Schalke will be in Friday’s quarter-final draw.

Someone who won’t be though is Antonio Rüdiger’s AS Roma. The Germany defender missed his side’s 4-2 first-leg defeat in Lyon, but was unable to help them turn the tie around in the Italian capital, as a 2-1 win saw them fall one goal short of joining Schalke in the Europa League’s final eight.
