Gomez wins, Khedira draws, Klose loses

World Cup winner Miroslav Klose could only manage a defeat on his comeback to Lazio after a long period on the sidelines injured. On the eighth matchday of Serie A, the 37-year-old started but suffered a surprise 2-1 defeat to Sassuolo. Klose led his team out as captain, but was taken off after 65 minutes.

Sassuolo, who overtook Lazio in the table with the victory, are now fifth. They took an early lead in the 7th minute as Domenico Berardi converted a penalty. Simone Missiroli doubled the lead in the 60th minute and seven minutes later Felipe Anderson scored, but it ended up being a consolation as the game finished 2-1. It was Klose's first game since the beginning of August when he tore his hamstring in the Champions League qualifier against Bayer Leverkusen.

Juventus forced to settle for 0-0 draw – Khedira hits the woodwork

Italian champions Juventus remain unbeaten since the return of world champion Sami Khedira, but missed out on their third win in a row. The Old Lady of Italian football faced Inter Milan on the eighth matchday of the Serie A, and the match ended 0-0. Inter have 17 points, and are behind Fiorentina (18) and AS Roma (17). Juventus find themselves 14th with just nine points.

Khedira played the entire 90 minutes, putting in a commanding performance and was unlucky to only hit the post in the second half. In his first match for the club after arriving from Real Madrid, Khedira scored against FC Bologna, and received a lot of praise for his performance in the Champions League match against FC Sevilla.

Besiktas and Gomez overtake Galatasary

Striker Mario Gomez left the pitch without a goal on matchday 8, but helped his side Besiktas wrestle back top spot in the SüperLig in Turkey. The 11-time champions secured three points against Caykur Rizespor after a goal from Ricardo Quaresma (63’), and overtook Podolski’s Galatasary in the table.

Besiktas (19 points) are top of the league, ahead of Galatasary and Fenerbahce, who are second and third respectively (both 17 points). Besiktas have Europa League action on Thursday evening against Locomotive Moscow, and Galatasary face Benfica in the Champions League on Wednesday.
