Gomez through with Fiorentina, end of the road for Kuranyi’s Moscow

ACF Fiorentina have comfortably made it through to the quarterfinals of the Europa League, even without Germany international Mario Gomez on board. After drawing 1-1 at home in the first leg, the Viola were 3-0 winners away against Italian rivals AS Roma on Thursday evening.

Gonzalo Rodriguez, Marco Alonso and José María Basanta had the visitors three goals up inside 22 minutes to kill off the tie. Roma’s Adem Ljajic was sent off in the closing minutes for a second bookable offence. Gomez returned to the Fiorentina matchday squad following a ligament injury, but didn’t feature as Fiorentina claimed a 4-1 aggregate win.

Former DFB-Team player Kevin Kuranyi has bowed out of the competition with Dynamo Moscow though. A 0-0 draw with SSC Napoli wasn’t enough to progress following the Italian side’s 3-1 victory in the first leg.

The third of the early kick-offs in Thursday night’s Europa League action saw the final English side left in Europe Everton FC knocked out, after Dynamo Kiev turned around a 2-1 first leg loss by winning 5-2 in Ukraine.
