The new year with couldn’t have got off to a worse start for Mario Gomez in the Italian top flight with AC Fiorentina. The striker missed from the spot in the 1-0 defeat to bottom club FC Parma and was guilty that Fiorentina are still adrift of the European places. Gomez’s teammates Gonzalo Rodriguez and Stefan Savic were also dismissed after receiving two yellow cards each.
Fiorentina drop to ninth place on matchday 17 following Parma’s Andrea Costa’s goal in the early stages. Marko Marin was in the squad but did not feature.
Enthralling battle at the top
AS Roma put league leaders Juventus under further pressure. The side from the capital won 1-0 against Udinese thanks to a Davide Astori goal and are now level on 37 points with Juve, who take on Inter Milan this evening with new signing and World Champion Lukas Podolski in the Inter side. AC Milan were unable to find any momentum after losing 2-1 to Sassuolo and are now two points off the European places in seventh place. Andrea Poli brought AC into the lead but goals from Nicola Sansone and Simone Zaza gave Sassuolo the victory.
Lazio won 3-0 against Sampdoria on Monday without Miroslav Klose, who was on the bench for the full 90 minutes.
