Gomez: "Lets win the championship first"

Löw is not the only one to have noticed Gomez' improving form. There are plenty of transfer rumours with apparently Wolfsburg, Schalke and even Real Madrid interested. Gomez won't let these discussions get to him. He is currently playing for Besiktas on loan from Fiorentina. In April he had the chance to take the option of extending his loan deal with Besiktas but declined. However, he emphasised that this was not a sign that he intends to leave the club.

"I've always said that I can imagine staying here," he wrote to his Besiktas fans on his Facebook page. "The fans are awesome and our stadium is fantastic," he continued and emphasised that he had definitely not yet decided on his future. "But like I said last week already, lets win the championship first - together."

Mario Gomez is an elegant man. He is a Hugo Boss model, featured on the cover of Turkey's GQ a few weeks ago and celebrates his goals with a swift Torero-move. The 30-year-old always knows how to present himself but doesn't necessarily seek the spotlight. Zlatan Ibrahimovic for example "can't put a foot outside his door in Paris," Gomez told Playboy. "I'd rather just be Mario, who plays for Besiktas. I can go out to have dinner without any problems, go on vacation and just live a private life."

On Sunday he is looking to secure the championship title with Besiktas as they lead the standings by six points ahead of local city rivals Fenerbahce. A victory over Osmanlispor in their new, highly modern stadium would secure the title.

Mario Gomez will have played a big part in Besiktas winning the title for the first time since 2009. Newspapers are labelling him as a "goal machine" or "goal emperor" and see him "on a good path to become the greatest striker in the clubs' history". Gomez has bagged 25 goals this season, more than any other foreigner in Benfica's history. He leads the goalscorer rankings with five goals ahead of Samuel Eto'o. In the last five games he struck six times, the most recent of which secured a 1-0 win over Lukas Podolski's Galatasaray.

Löw: "Mario Gomez has rediscovered his scoring touch"

The assist came from former Frankfurt player Cenk Tosun and one of the first players to celebrate with Gomez was Andreas Beck. The right back has become a fan favourite in Istanbul and is certainly another reason why Gomez feels so at home on the Bosporus. "Mario has always been a goal machine," said Beck, who won the German championship together with Gomez in 2007 with VfB Stuttgart - a long time ago.

Winning the title with Besiktas would Gomez' first league triumph since 2013. The last two years with AC Fiorentina were difficult for the Germany international and he was constantly battling with injuries. Germany coach Joachim Löw will certainly have noticed that Gomez has been fit and in good form for months now. "You can tell that he has more confidence again," said Löw. "His body language reveals that his assurance has returned. He's rediscovered his scoring touch."

Gomez scored four times during 2012 European Championships in Poland and the Ukraine. His wonderful ball control and fine finishes in the game with the Netherlands will never be forgotten. When Mario Gomez is in top form, he can definitely become an asset for Germany in France this summer. He himself remains humble: "All I want is for Germany to become European Champions. I'd be happy to have played just three minutes in the entire tournament if that's the case," he told Playboy.
