Gomez in Istanbul: Old form and new targets

10th July 2016 will be a big day for millions of football fans across the world, one which many desire to be involved in. The final of the European Championships will be played on this day in Paris and a new king of Europe will be crowned. The World Cup winners are ambitious and want to win the competition, but there will be 552 players and 24 all yearning for the same thing: the trophy.

Mario Gomez is confident that he will be one of the players celebrating on that day. The once out of favour striker is now back in the national team after a substantial period of time in which he didn't make the cut. Appropriately, 10th July is also the German's birthday.

European Championship title?

Mario Gomez can decide the importance and meaning of his 31st birthday himself. There wouldn't be much better than a EURO title as a birthday present. There are, however, a few hurdles to leap over before Germany and Gomez can win the title. The group stage must be survived, followed by the quarter final, and the semi final. Gomez must also prove himself to national team coach Joachim Löw and earn a spot in the team out of the 23-man squad. “If I stay as fit as I am now, I will have a good chance,” said the 30-year-old.

13 goals in 17 games

Gomez' optimism has returned along with his form, self-confidence, goals and fitness. This has a lot to do with his transfer to Turkey. Many were sceptical about his move from Fiorentina to the Bosphorus, but it has worked out well and Super Mario is now gracing the Super Lig. With 13 goals in 17 games, he has almost single-handedly fired Besiktas to the top of the league.

Gomez is happy with his move, despite not having heard the best things about where he was going. “When I spoke to people who hadn't been there, they said things like 'What are you doing?' and 'Are you mad? To leave Fiorentina would be to go two levels down.'” Gomez also spoke to others who did know what it was like. “Everyone who has already been here said that it was such an opportunity and that I would have the best year of my life.” Gomez chose to move from Italy after having had two injury filled years.

Ahead of the best year of his life, Gomez knew there would be the hardest weeks. “The first weeks was vital to put faith back into my body.” Not having had a good time in Florence, he decided to have a fresh start in Istanbul, topped off by being selected for the last two national team games of the year. “Löw rang me and said that I had earned it. He saw not only my goals but the way I play. My body language, determination and will to get goals.”
