Gomez grabs a brace as Fiorentina reach semis

Germany international Mario Gomez’s improvement in form continued as he scored a brace, which saw Fiorentina qualify for the semi-finals of the Coppa Italia. The striker, who had been heavily criticised in recent months, scored both goals (65’ & 89’) as his side beat AS Roma to reach the last four.

Gomez, who was replaced shortly after his second goal, has now scored five goals in his last three games, having not scored in his previous 16 appearances. He was the match winner in the previous round, when his brace helped Fiorentina to a 3-1 win over Atalanta.

Fiorentina, who sold Colombian star Juan Cuadrado to Chelsea on deadline day, where he replaced André Schürrle, face Juventus in the two-legged semi-final. The games take place on 4th March and 8th April.

The reigning champions, and current table toppers, reached the semis thanks to a 1-0 win over Parma. Lazio also reached the last four thanks to a 1-0 victory over AC Milan. Their opponents will be decided on Wednesday, when Napoli face Lukas Podolski’s Inter Milan.
