Gomez fires Wolfsburg to victory against Darmstadt

Germany international Mario Gomez was on target during VfL Wolfsburg’s 1-0 victory over SV Darmstadt 98 on Bundesliga matchday 25. SV Werder Bremen secured a 3-0 win over RB Leipzig, while 1. FC Köln ended a five game winless streak with a 4-2 triumph over Hertha BSC.

TSG 1899 Hoffenheim confirmed their ambitions to finish in the upper regions of the standings with a 1-0 victory over Bayer 04 Leverkusen, while FC Augsburg and SC Freiburg shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw.

Leipzig looked to invest more after falling behind, but Bremen doubled their advantage on the hour mark through Florian Grillitsch. With seconds left to play, substitute Florian Kainz rounded off the victory with his goal to make it 3-0 for SVW.

Japan’s Yuya Osako scored six minutes into the game in the Rhein-Energie-Stadion and Anthony Modeste scored two more before the break, giving Köln a comfortable 3-0 lead at half-time over Hertha. Vedad Ibisevic pulled one back from the spot after the break, but Modeste quickly restored Köln’s three-goal advantage with his 22nd goal of the campaign. John Brooks was on target for Hertha after 69 minutes, but it was not enough to for Hertha to launch a comeback.

Hoffenheim and Leverkusen created a number of chances in the first half, but no goals were scored in the opening 45 minutes. Sandro Wagner broke the deadlock shortly after the hour-mark. Leverkusen, after having faced Champions League elimination during the week, threw everything they had forward but TSG held onto their slim advantage and claimed their fourth straight win at home.

Florian Niederlechner scored from the spot to give the visitors the lead in Augsburg, before Konstantinos Stafylidis levelled for FCA before the break. The result did not change in the second half, with both teams settling for a point.
