Gomez fires Besiktas to victory

Mario Gomez played a key role in Besiktas' latest win. He scored the opener as they beat Sivasspor 2-1 on Saturday to maintain their grip in top spot in the Turkish Süper Lig. The Die Mannschaft forward netted after 58 minutes. Oguzhan Özyakup grabbed the second soon after (62'). Gomez has now scored 22 goals this season.

World Champion Lukas Podolski and Galatasaray Istanbul continued to lose ground in Turkey’s title race after a 4-2 defeat at Antalyaspor. Podolski was involved in the build up to Diego Angelo’s own goal in the first half, but Antalyaspor’s Samuel Eto’o bagged a brace to earn his team a victory.

After their seventh consecutive game without a win, Galatasaray remain in seventh place and it looks like they will have to prepare for a season without European football, regardless of their ban from UEFA.

Kroos and Real could still lift the title

Spain’s record champions Real Madrid kept their title chances alive on matchday 33, recording a comfortable 5-1 win at local rivals FC Getafe. World Champion Toni Kroos and his team are now just one point behind table toppers and arch-rivals FC Barcelona, who have the chance to go four points clear again against Valencia on Sunday.

Four days after claiming their spot in the Champions League semi-final, Real cruised to victory in Getafe thanks to goals from Karim Benzema, Isco, Gareth Bale, James Rodriguez and Cristiano Ronaldo. Kroos played the entire 90, while Ronaldo scored his 31st La Liga goal of the season. Pablo Sarabia bagged Getafe’s consolation goal in the 85th minute.

Manchester United seal Aston Villa’s relegation

Aston Villa, Champions of Europe in 1982, have become the first relegated side in this year’s Premier League campaign after a 1-0 defeat to record Champions Manchester United on matchday 34. It will be the first time in 29 years that Villa will not feature in the top flight.

United, who continue to be without Germany skipper Bastian Schweinsteiger, are now just one point adrift from a Champions League spot with 56 points to their name. Wayne Rooney made his comeback against Villa, having last appeared for United on matchday 26. Youngster Marcus Rashford scored the deciding goal of the match in the 32nd minute for Louis van Gaal’s side.

PSG remain dominant

French champions Paris St. Germain recovered from Champions League elimination to beat SM Caen 6-0 on Saturday, a defeat which damaged their European aspirations. Zlatan Ibrahimovic grabbed a brace (12'/56') and now has 32 league goals to his name. Blaise Matuidi (45'+1), Edinson Cavani (49'), Angel Di Maria (52') and Maxwell (76') also netted.

Kevin Trapp was an unused substitute.
