Alongside Dortmund’s Ginter, the 40-man long list also contains Germany international Max Meyer (Schalke 04), Hakan Calhanoglu (Bayer Leverkusen), Julian Green (Hamburger SV) and Bayern talents Gianluca Gaudino and Pierre-Emile Höjberg.

Some of the high profile nominees from abroad are Luke Shaw (England/ Manchester United), Adnan Januzaj (Belgium/Manchester United), Raheem Sterling (England/ FC Liverpool), Divock Origi (Belgium/OSC Lille) and Munir El Haddadi (Spain/FC Barcelona).

The award, which was initiated by Italian sports magazine Tuttosport, has been voted for by international sports journalists since 2003. The winner will be announced next Saturday (1st November). The only German player to have won the award is World Cup winner Mario Götze (Bayern München), who won it back in 2011.
