The goal that sealed World Cup glory in Rio has been named Germany’s Goal of the Year. As expected, Mario Götze’s volleyed shot into the far corner, to make it 1-0 in the 113rd minute of extra-time against Argentina in the Maracana, received the most votes in a poll run by ARD-Sportschau.
47.7% voted for the FC Bayern player’s match winning goal that clinched the national team’s fourth World Cup win. Paderborn’s Moritz Stoppelkamp (18.8%) came second with his spectacular 90 yard effort in the 2-0 win against Hannover 96. In third place was Klaas-Jan-Huntlaar’s (6.1%) rocket strike into the top corner during Schalke 04’s 6-1 defeat to Real Madrid in the Champions League quarter final.
Since the inaugural vote in 1971, this is the tenth time a Bayern player has won Goal of the Year, including: Gerd Müller (1972, 1976), Karl-Heinz Rummenigge (1980, 1981), Jürgen Wegmann (1988), Klaus Augenthaler (1989), Lothar Matthäus (1992), Jean-Pierre Papin (1995), Giovane Elber (1999) Mario Götze (2014)
