Götze: "We need to learn from our mistakes"

FC Bayern München drew the first-leg of their UEFA Champions League last 16 tie against Shakhtar Donetsk 0-0 last night. After the game World Champion Mario Götze spoke to DFB.de about the game.

Question: Mr Götze, what do you make of the 0-0 draw?

Mario Götze: I know we would have preferred to have scored a goal. Obviously it became more difficult after Xabi Alonso’s red card. In the first half we had a few chances. We didn’t let them have too many opportunities either. That is certainly a positive to take into the next game.

Question: Are you happy with the result?

Götze: Happy isn’t the right word. We wanted to score a goal in order to go into the second leg in a stronger position than we are going to. But, at least we have a second match.

Question: Are the opponents dangerous?

Götze: Definitely. That’s the Champions League. Anything can happen in the second leg. Small things decide games like this. If they were to score, we would be in a dangerous situation. We need to remain positive though, we have a second game, which takes place at home. I think that we’ll progress.

Question: What did you think of the referee?

Götze: There’s no point in getting annoyed, these things happen. We need to accept what happened and move on.

Question: Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said it was a catastrophe...

Götze: Everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

Question: You own 8-0 at the weekend but drew 0-0 against Shakhtar, how shaky and unstable are the team at the moment?

Götze: What exactly does that mean? We know that life is difficult in the Champions League. I’ve already said that it’s always difficult when the first leg ends goalless. We wanted to score a goal. We simply need to perform a bit better next time. It’s not always possible to win 8-0.

Question: You beat Hamburg and Stuttgart but struggled against Wolfsburg, Schalke and Donetsk. Are you struggling to fire on all cylinders at the moment?

Götze: We made mistakes against Wolfsburg, but against Schalke and Donetsk we had ten men. We need to learn from our mistakes as a collective. Despite this, I think we’re in good positions in the Bundesliga, the DFB Cup and the Champions League.
