Gladbach want revenge for the 5-1 defeat

On Wednesday (KO 18:30), Borussia Mönchengladbach host Bundesliga rivals and local rivals Bayer Leverkusen in the DFB-Pokal round of 16. The visitors are on top form at the moment and will want to continue their good run.

Leverkusen have gone twelve league games unbeaten and in doing so have made their way swiftly up the Bundesliga table. Their most recent game was a thrilling 4-4 draw away at Hannover 96. For both Gladbach and Leverkusen meanwhile, advancing to the next round of the DFB-Pokal would take them a step closer to qualifying for Europe for next season. Additionally, the Fohlenelf will want to use the cup game to make amends. In October, Gladbach lost 5-1 at home to Leverkusen despite leading 1-0 at half time. They will be hoping for revenge this time around.

The Fohlenelf do have a good DFB-Pokal record against Leverkusen, having won five of the six cup ties against the Werkself. Gladbach got their first cup win against them in December 1971, winning 3-0 away from home. The most recent meeting between the two sides came in the 2010/11 season, when Mönchengladbach scraped through to the third round, winning 5-4 on penalties. Leverkusen’s only DFB-Pokal triumph against Mönchengladbach was in 1995. They won 2-0 at home after goals from Ulf Kirsten and former Foal Holger Fach.

Herrlich lifted the DFB-Pokal trophy with both teams

Current Leverkusen manager Heiko Herrlich has history at both teams. In 1993 as a 21 year old, he moved to Borussia Mönchengladbach and developed into a prolific goalscorer there. In the 1994/95 season, he was the joint-highest goalscorer in the Bundesliga on 20 goals – level with Mario Basler. In that same season, he also won the DFB-Pokal with Gladbach. He had achieved that same feat at Leverkusen two years beforehand.

Borussia Mönchengladbach are in the round of 16 for the fourth season in a row. Leverkusen were the victims of a cup upset last season, losing 4-3 on penalties in the second round against Sportfreunde Lotte. Before that, Leverkusen had reached the quarter finals three years running.

In this season’s competition, Gladbach reached the round of 16 with victories against Rot-Weiss Essen (2-1) and Fortuna Düsseldorf (1-0) whilst Leverkusen got to this stage with wins against Karlsruher SC (3-0 AET) and Union Berlin (4-1).
