Hamburg enjoyed their first win in eight games to climb up to 15th and out of the relegation places thanks to the winner from ex-Germany midfielder Marcell Jansen on 28 minutes which took the pressure off coach Thorsten Fink.

On Friday VfB Stuttgart earned a dramatic 4-4 draw at German league leaders Borussia Dortmund as Christian Gentner hit the equaliser in the 92nd minute. In a breath-taking final 15 minutes, the lead changed hands three times.

Borussia Mönchengladbach's slump continued on Sunday as they lost 2-1 at Hannover 96 to leave them 12 points behind German league leaders Borussia Dortmund with six games left. This was Gladbach's second straight league defeat and they have picked up just six points from a possible 21 in their last seven games.

Despite Sunday's defeat Gladbach remain fourth, 10 points clear of Hannover who move up to fifth. Ivory Coast striker Didier Ya Konan put Hanover ahead when he fired home on 57 minutes after rounding Gladbach keeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

Third-placed Schalke 04 were held to a 1-1 draw at Hoffenheim as a 30th minute penalty by Hoffenheim midfielder Sejad Salihovic was cancelled out by a second-half spot kick from Schalke's Dutch striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar.

Hertha Berlin were drubbed 4-1 at home to VfL Wolfsburg and remain second from bottom of the table and four points from safety as ex-Germany striker Patrick Helmes netted twice in the rout.

Bayern Munich trimmed Borussia Dortmund's lead at the top of the German league back to three points on Saturday as the Bavarians' 1-0 win at Nürnberg heated up the title race with six games left.

At Nürnberg, Munich were frustrated by their hosts' robust defence, but after Germany striker Mario Gomez was harshly ruled offside having found the net, Robben soon put the Bavarians ahead just moments later.

Bayern midfielder Toni Kroos chipped over the Nürnberg defence and although Franck Ribery's shot was blocked by goalkeeper Raphael Schaefer, Robben was on hand to fire home on 69 minutes.

Freiburg stay clear of the relegation zone after picking up their third straight win and have gone five games without defeat after they earned a 2-0 win at Bayer Leverkusen, who produced a poor performance.
