Gladbach recover from 2-0 down to beat Leverkusen

Borussia Mönchengladbach ended their winless run away from home on matchday 18 of the Bundesliga. Dieter Hecking’s side came from 2-0 down to win 3-2 in the derby at Bayer Leverkusen. Lars Stindl and Raffael turned the match around for Borussia, with both getting on the scoresheet.

The result means that the Fohlenelf get their first away victory of the season after the goalless draw with Darmstadt. Moreover Gladbach had only managed to pick up two points away from home beforehand.

Headers from Germany international Jonathan Tah and Mexican forward Javier Chicharito Hernandez gave the Werkself a 2-0 half-time lead. Both came from Hakan Calhanoglu corners, with Karim Bellarabi getting the flick-on for Hernandez’s goal from close range.

Gladbach fought back in the second half of the topsy turvy game. The foals had had the majority of the play in the first half an hour and thanks to a willingness to get forward and an aggressive form of pressing, the pressure on the home defence remained constant. Raffael and Mahmoud Dahoud both test Bernd Leo in the Leverkusen goal early on and Leno had to be alert minutes later to prevent Thorgan Hazard from opening the scoring.

Leverkusen’s aerial dominance led to the home side leading at the break. Jannik Vestergaard Tah wasn’t closed down and had an easy header to open the scoring and the next corner three minutes later saw Leverkusen double their lead. Borussia failed to deal with a corner and the second goal came from the unmarked man at the back post.

Gladbach demonstrated a new sense of hope after the restart as Stindl fought his way through Tah before firing home to half the deficit. After that the foals were unstoppable. Stindl headed home the equaliser before Raffael won a one on one duel with Tah to seal the win.
