Gladbach back to winning ways

Borussia Mönchengladbach and their coach André Schubert were able to breathe a huge sigh of relief on matchday 14 of the Bundesliga, as they secured a 1-0 victory over 1. FSV Mainz 05, to end a run of eight league games without a win. Andreas Christensen scored the decisive goal of the game in the second half, relieving some of the pressure that had mounted on their coach. Meanwhile Mainz suffered their fourth straight defeat on the road in the Bundesliga.

The hosts looked nervous in the opening stages, which was likely a result of their recent lack of form in the Bundesliga. They didn’t provide any pace or confidence, allowing Mainz to organise their defence well and avoid any real danger in the first half. Lars Stindl recorded Borussia’s only shot on target in the opening 45 minutes.

Schubert reacted to his team’s display and brought on Thorgan Hazard for André Hahn at half-time. However, Gladbach continued to lack precision going forward. Mainz were also unable to create any real clear-cut chances and the game appeared to be heading for a stalemate, until Christensen scored with a header from a corner after 76 minutes. Shortly before the final whistle, Mainz were reduced to ten men, as Jean-Philippe Gbamin was sent off after a second bookable offense. Just before that moment, however, Pablo De Blasis had a goal disallowed by referee Robert Hartmann.

A late Kießling winner in Gelsenkirchen

Thanks to Stefan Kießling, Bayer Leverkusen have stopped Schalke 04's good run of Bundesliga form, as the club from Gelsenkirchen look to make up for their poor start to the season. The Royal Blues' defensive rock Naldo was given his marching orders in just the fourth minute, but his side showed great fighting spirit and even had the majority of the best chances in the Sunday evening kick-off. Schalke are currently eight points off the European places with just two games left before the winter break.

Despite playing with a man advantage for almost the whole 90 minutes, it took until the 89th for Leverkusen to break the hosts down, as Kießling scored his first goal of the season to clinch the three points for his side. The winner came from a delightful header into the bottom corner, after he was found unmarked from a free kick.
