Gladbach and Wolves both with routine victories

Wolfsburg ensured that FC Bayern don’t run out of sight in the Bundesliga as they produced a routine 3-0 win over SC Freiburg in the early game in Sunday’s top-flight action. Kevin De Bruyne struck for the hosts in the first half before Ricardo Rodriguez (penalty) and Maximilian Arnold struck towards the end.

In the final game of matchday 25, Borussia Mönchengladbach saw off Hannover 96 2-0 courtesy of a Patrick Herrmann goal either side of half time.

De Bruyne inspirational again for the Wolves

Wolfsburg applied the pressure from the off against SCF with man-of-the-moment Bas Dost going close for the hosts. It didn’t take them long to find the back of the net though with De Bruyne continuing his fine form in all competitions to net the opener for the Wolves. Despite several chances for both teams, somehow the score remained 1-0 at the break.

Freiburg upped the ante after the interval and almost drew level courtesy of Klaus and looked to be heading to a tense final 15 minutes until SCF keeper Roman Bürki brought down De Bruyne inside the box, with referee Sascha Stegemann pointing to the spot. Ricardo Rodriguez made no mistake from the spot and doubled Wolfsburg’s advantage. De Bruyne then capped off a man-of-the-match performance to set up Arnold for the third to round off a comfortable win.

Gladbach win sixth straight home game

Borussia started superbly at home to Hannover and only had their own shooting and 96 keeper Ron-Robert Zieler to blame for not going in front inside the opening 30 minutes. It was Thorgan Hazard who provided the breakthrough for the Foals just before the half-time whistle though, dispatching Herrmann, who kept his composure to bury the ball into the bottom left-hand corner.

Zieler kept the Lower Saxony club in the game after the interval with multiple saves and was the main reason for keeping Hannover in the game. Patrick Herrmann popped up again with 15 minutes left on the clock though, latching onto Max Kruse’s pass across goal to seal the win. The victory is Gladbach’s sixth home win and a victory that sees them regain third spot in the Bundesliga.
