Gladbach “allowed to dream”

Under new head coach Dieter Hecking, Borussia Mönchengladbach seemed to have regained their confidence which was sorely missing before Christmas. “There are two games to go before Berlin so we’re allowed to dream. The cup is a good opportunity for us,” said World Champion Christoph Kramer after his side’s comfortable 2-0 win in the round of 16 over second-division side SpVgg Greuther Fürth.

With this cup victory and seven points from three games in the league, Hecking has enjoyed the best start to his Gladbach career of any head coach of the Fohlenelf. He has “awoken” the club, as Oscar Wendt put it.

Kramer: “Fire inside us”

Thanks to this recent purple patch, the Fohlenelf are confident heading into their coming games – first they are hosted by Werder Bremen at the weekend (15:30 CET) and then face Fiorentina in the Europa League (16th & 23rd February). “We feel good at the moment, we've got fire in us and we’re working well. If we carry on like this, we’ll be tough to beat,” said Kramer, adding he and his teammates can’t get too excited.

With this last statement, he mirrored the thinking of his new coach. “We now have concentrate on Bremen and look forwards; we want to remain unbeaten. Let’s keep going like this!” said the 52 year old, who took over from André Schubert in December.

Hecking: “We can’t let up”

“Every win” of course helps, explained the experienced coach, who was let go by VfL Wolfsburg in the Autumn of 2016. However, at the same time, he warned his players to not get carried away: “We can’t let up, we’re still in a dangerous situation.” Borussia currently have a seven-point advantage over 16th place - the relegation play-off position.

Hecking, who won the DFB Cup with Wolfsburg in 2015, is putting the upcoming quarterfinal against Hamburg SV in the background (28th February or 1st March), knowing his men have tough challenges in the league and the Europa League to overcome before then. He was asked how many more games in the Cup he would like to face, “preferably all of them until Berlin” was his reply, before stepping onto the team bus shortly before midnight.
